summer game fest 2024
Take a behind-the-scenes tour of Summer Game Fest Play Days 2024
Summer Game Fest 2024 officially wrapped up on June 10, after a long weekend of game previews, developer interviews and unlimited cold brew -- but we just published our final stories from the show this week (held under embargo, of course). Those were Mat Smith's impressions of Black Myth: Wukong and Tales of the Shire, and they capped off a month of juicy video game news out of the summer's biggest show. No, Silksong did not make an appearance. There were, however, plenty of bright and shiny games at the show, and many of them were available to play for the first time ever. Our hands-on and first-look stories include Assassin's Creed Shadows, Astro Bot, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, Lego Horizon Adventures, Marvel Rivals, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Neva and Skate Story.
Assassin's Creed Shadows is a tale of two very different assassins
The long-running Assassin's Creed video game industrial complex has finally reached Japan – and I've been waiting. Assassin's Creed Shadows is set in feudal Japan, in the late 16th century, to be precise, at a time of political upheaval that birthed the ninja. While I didn't get to play Shadows, at Summer Game Fest 2024, Ubisoft offered a hands-off gameplay demo, revealing how the game will play with two different but equal protagonists. If you missed the initial reveal, Shadows' protagonists are Yasuke, a powerful outsider samurai who can strike the armor off enemies, and Naoe, an assassin/ninja with a killer "sickle on-chain" kusarigama and those traditional AC killing methods -- she has a wrist blade. Instead of choosing a single character to play the entire game, you can switch between the characters for assassination runs and exploration segments.
The Morning After: What to expect at Summer Game Fest 2024
Summer Games Fest kicks off this week, with its titular game showcase starting Friday. Expect a string of SGF events, livestreams, YouTube trailers to follow… and maybe a Silksong update. We'll be reporting live from LA, offering our thoughts and impressions of many of the games at the event -- especially if we get to play any of them. We break down every event right here, but the biggest events include the Summer Game Fest Live on Friday June 7 at 5PM ET, the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday June 9, 1PM ET and Ubisoft Forward Monday June 10, 3PM ET. Wait, was there something else on that day?
